When do plants change from cultivated to wild?

I have ground cherries I planted three years ago and they were planted purposely from seed but I have let them free seed now with no intervention for three years. Same with my flax and dill. They move about the yard and I just sort of let them.

My question is where the line is drawn? Is it when they migrate down the street, a certain distance? At what point does it escape, so to speak.

A single individual plant never changes from cultivated to wild. If it was planted, it is cultivated, and if it wasn’t, it’s wild. Plants that come up on their own, however are wild, regardless of where they sprout or the status of their parent.

So, any individual ground cherry or flax or dill you planted would be cultivated. But any plant that sprouted on their own (even if their parent was one you planted) is wild regardless of where it is.

Okay, thanks, that was simpler than I was thinking. Nice and clear lines then.
