On every observation, there is a symbol that shows the number of IDs, or some other ID-related thing:
I was wondering, why choose this symbol? It does seem a bit random to me.

Computer vision identifications display this badge
I noticed that, too! I think itās this symbol with little stars around it.
A pen nib from graphic design archives?
Like cut and paste. Scissors and glue?!
Or the pencil I clicked to āwriteā this.
It looks like some kind of tag, so my guess is that it references specimen labels in a museum or something.
something like https://sv.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil:Field_labels_attached_to_the_skin_of_BMNH_1939.3315_-_ZooKeys-255-103-g007.jpeg was my assumption
Ooh, a tag makes sense. Thanks everyone!
but a tag / label doesnāt have that elegant fishtail.
Not much space to write on it either.
To be slightly pedantic, the CV icon is slightly different in that it has some machine learning fairy sparkles around it:
Fairy Sparkles! I knew Iād seen those somewhere!
I filled out a lot of skin/specimen tags during my museum days. (Not real similar to this older style.) None had fairy sparkles even when we assigned a species ID.
I guess iNat staff would know the graphic designer (maybe @abhasm?) and we could get the explanation from the horseās mouth
These are now officially called āmachine learning fairy sparklesā. From now on, anyone who calls them anything else will be wrong.
MLFS for short?
You may not shorten Sparkle.
It loses its sparkle then.

Thanks! I was struggling to come up with an original name for my bowling team.
Iām sure that name will strike fear in your opponents.
This icon predates me at iNat! As others guessed, I believe it was meant to be like a museum tag.
I donāt believe in magic.
I donāt believe in miracles,
I rely on them.
