I’m having a sort of related problem here. A user is making a lot of IDs (on my observations and others) which are just agreements with previous IDs, on a wide range of taxa. I find it slightly disruptive since it just clutters my notifications and provides no information. I tried to contact the user but I got no answer. I understand it’s pretty harmless but I can’t help finding it a bit annoying. What should I do? Just ignore?
I mean, I’m fine if the occasional Harmonia axyridis gets five IDs, not very useful but it’s an occasional occurrence and it doesn’t bother me. But to see the same user popping out at almost every observation just to agree tickles me wrong.
If that user’s identifications agree with your ID on the observation, you could turn off confirming ID notifications. That would make it so you won’t get notifications about any ID that is exactly the same as your own. If you want to be notified about confirming IDs but not from this particular user, and they only make confirming IDs, you could mute them, which means you won’t get notifications about anything they do. But in any case you should probably talk to them - ask why they’re doing this, and politely request them to stop. It might turn out they have an interesting reason for it.
Edit: Sorry, missed the bit where you said they wouldn’t talk to you. It would be good to communicate with them anyway, but if there is no way to then just try something else.
This is probably a person who is following you and is helping to get your observations to Research Grade (whether you want that help or not).
keep in mind also, that they might be subscribed to a PLACE that you have made a lot of observations from, so even though it seems they are “following you”, it could just be that you have been “roaming around in their place”, so to speak.
You can turn off “same IDs” notifications, which leaves you getting notifications that are different to your own ID, and if you get to know their userid because they do it so often, you can even just not click into the notifications from them. I open all new notifications in new tabs, and will sometimes spot someone who I know (or think) to be “flashcarding”, and I just don’t open their notifications. The new notifications system is likely coming out soon, and will hopefully make customisation of notifications easier…
