Wild or captive/cultivated? Mature trees on residential property

Hi everyone,

I’m new here  I’ve recently moved onto a 4-acre property with some old, mature trees. I’m unsure whether they should be classified as wild or captive/cultivated in iNaturalist.

I don’t know if the previous owners planted them, or if they were already present when the land was rezoned from bushland to residential. How should I classify them in this case?

Thanks in advance for your guidance!

It definitely depends on some factors. The two biggest giveaways are the species and the pattern in which they are planted. If they are predominately horticultural species that aren’t known to naturalize in your area, they are likely planted. And even if they are native species, if they’re growing in a row on either side of a path, or growing on a grid structure, there is a decent chance they were cultivated. But if you really can’t tell, the default on iNaturalist is to leave them unmarked (they default to wild).

Thanks, that does make sense. I will go back and update my observations.

Carob and lemon were planted in this garden. Wild olive could have been planted by birds, but I know we planted the second one. It will be your judgement call - for each tree.
