I feel you. I practically grew up on the University of Louisville main campus. Cardinals don’t have teeth, either!
Here’s a project for that: Home Compost Exploration
Thank you!
You’re welcome (-:
When you use the iNaturalist org observations link to figure out how many iNat observations there are, and, as the observations increase by the second, you type the number on the link higher to keep up.
(That was a mouthful😅)
…you awkwardly crouch down to photograph a bug as people tell my friends “What the hell is he doin’?”
When your eyes glaze over reading people’s comments about the new grant from Google and you decide it’s more productive to make a few hundred IDs with your time instead.
Once I was leaning over in a chair locked in taking pictures of a spider and someone came up to me concerned thinking I needed medical assistance…
When you walk in the pouring rain but get a new bird lifer so it is all fine. Then continuing to convince yourself that not getting a photo will not make you enjoy the moment any less.
When you do a moth lighting and plead with the moths who fly past to land for just a second.
When you go out for a regular stroll in a full get-up in case you need to step off trail, or see something really cool. Or when you forget to dress for this and go into muck anyway.
When driving is a test of will to not pull over every time you see a duck in a pond
When you bend down to take pictures, or gaze excitedly at a tree and people ask what you are looking at and are very disappointed at your answer.
The day you finally look through all your photos and make sure your entire life list is posted… Just did that recently.
And for species you know very little about, you worry that you may delete the one photo that shows a critical feature for the ID.
• When a supposed to be 1h walk with family turns into a nearly 4h one…
• When you spend hours laying in a foot of snow, hoping to get a decent picture of a bird.
• When you’re really excited that you found a tick (actually 5 of them).
(All of these are true…)
When you know you’re a wee bit off, but the weather is perfect so you go knowing full well you’ll have to delete each and every photo you take…
When you can tell exactly when you went places and where you went by your iNat record
I once went straight from a synagogue event to a nature walk with a co-worker and I got stuck in mud…in my white suit.
That is some commitment! What were you looking at!
when you night cruise for 5 nights, all from from 6pm to 7am for snakes in west texas, then sleep from 7 till 6pm again
when you pop straight out of synagogue on Saturday and drive to a preserve and herp in your nice clothes
