I bet that you IDed those non-Bombus observations because the observers originally IDed the Xylocopa and Apis as Bombus. Lots of people think all bees are bumblebees!
Thanks for all your IDing; I’m one of the 41,000+ beneficiaries of your efforts.
In my effort to reach 2:1 IDs to obs ratio, I figured I’d start with identifying some of my own most observed species. Turns out Thalasseus was a bit of a mess, so I’ve spent the past week or two starting to clean it up and now have 3 of the species in my top 15 (R.I.P. Clintonia borealis, Common Garter Snake, and Song Sparrow).
I identify a lot of unknowns in my area, which are often common species. That said, I’m surprised to have IDed over 1,500 species so far! I checked, and 280 are fungi, and 676 are plants. These numbers seemed high, so I looked at a few of the observations of organisms that I did not identify frequently – many of them I IDed only to family.
That page displays the Community ID, so everything you identify to family (or broader IDs) gives you credit for whatever genus or species the observations are ultimately refined to.
