A way to search for speces that one hasn't seen

There was a topic posted back in Sept 2020 about a way to search for needed/missing species (https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/a-way-to-search-needed-missing-species/15979). The second comment was that this feature was being worked on. Did anything happen with this? I was just thinking there are so many cool things I haven’t seen even locally to me that I don’t even know to look for.

On your dynamic life list there’s a feature that sounds similar to what you’re looking for. Here’s an example that I’ve used your username and Sacramento County CA; https://www.inaturalist.org/lifelists/vermfly?view=tree&details_view=unobservedSpecies&place_id=2339 . You can filter to specific taxon, too.

You can access this page by hovering over your profile image on the top right and clicking “Lists”

Thanks. But I’m specifically thinking of species that I’ve never seen before anywhere. It looks like I can only see things I haven’t seen in the county that have been seen by someone else.

does something like this work for you?

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?lat=37.78&lng=-122.46&radius=70&month=3,4,5&unobserved_by_user_id=alexshepard&view=species

you can edit the latitude, latitude, radius (in kilometers), month, and inat username to get results relevant to you.

Still not quite the thing I’m searching for. I want to see records of:

  1. Species I have never recorded an observation for anywhere.
  2. Records of those species in the area near me.

Try using the unobserved_by_user_id filter in Explore. I tried it on my home area and it seemed to do exactly what you’re looking for.

My example search: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=153904&unobserved_by_user_id=fluffyinca

One for you, with no location set: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=any&unobserved_by_user_id=vermfly&view=species
