Adding annotations - does anyone use them?

Since iNat records an encounter with an organism, observations with juveniles and adults in the same photo can be duplicated, each with a different life stage annotation. I did that for this Large Milkweed Bug observation:

It’s a good idea to recognize the intentional duplication in the notes so it doesn’t get flagged.

It might be worth a comment to the observer to let them know they can do so.

When identifying I often filter by sex or life stage. It helps that with hoverflies in Europe an increasingly good proportion of observations have these annotations. I find it easier to only think about the criteria for identifying one type of thing at a time. I would like it if it were easier to filter by annotations on the explore page, as well as the identify page.

What if I get an observation field wrong and someone disagrees? Will I get an email or notification?

The observation fields are quite hard to use, there are so many similar ones without guidance on when to use them.

I created a website that adds features that are present in the iNaturalist API but not currently present in the iNaturalist website Explore page. I added a few features related to annotations.

  • Ability to select multiple annotation types and values using the observations Filters. In this example I want all observations in San Francisco in 2024 with annotations ‘Fruits or Seeds’, ‘Flower Buds’, ‘Breaking Leaf Buds’, or ‘Green Leaves’

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?place_id=54321&verifiable=true&spam=false&term_value_id=14,15,37,38&term_id=12,36&year=2024

  • View the annotations for each observation on the observations grid view

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?place_id=54321&verifiable=true&spam=false&term_value_id=14,15,37,38&term_id=12,36&year=2024

  • I also added a Media view that shows all the photos and audio for each observation. The annotations are shown on the first photo/audio for each observation.

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?place_id=54321&verifiable=true&spam=false&term_value_id=14,15,37,38&term_id=12,36&year=2024&view=observations_observations&subview=media

  • Search observations by users who added annotations. In this example I search for observations where tiwane added annotations

https://inat-explorer.dataexplorers.info/?verifiable=true&spam=false&annotation_user_id=28

If you have any feedback, let me know.

iNaturalist website shows a list of the top identifiers and top observers. Would a list of top annotators be useful?

There is no notification for annotations either as observer or if someone disagrees. I always make a comment when I disagree with previous annotation and hope the original annotater reads their comments.

Are you referring to annotations or observation fields?

The first part of your question sounds like it is about annotations (it is not possible to disagree with values entered in observation fields); the second part sounds like it is about observation fields (there are a limited number of annotations that should be clearly distinct).

You do not get notifications if people disagree with an annotation. It is not possible for anyone except the annotator or observer to correct annotations, so some people may @ mention you if you have entered an incorrect value. It is often important to @ mention the annotator rather than just commenting on the observation, since in many cases the annotator may not have interacted with the observation otherwise and thus will not be subscribed to get notifications for it.

I believe you should get notifications if someone changes the value of an observation field you have added.

Thank you! You are right, I mean annotations in the first part of my comment.

What do you think might be a good way to start with this? I would be happy, for example, if someone messaged me and said, “We need to know all the blue tits that are at bird feeders,” and I could go and do that.

If allowed - start a forum thread. Happy to annotate. What do you need ?
