Description of need:
Allowing editing of IDs to add comments within the identify pop-up (rather than a new tab) would be more efficient for identifiers and encourage comments which can be helpful. Although only a moderate inconvenience, I suspect that the current ‘new tab editing’ dissuades comments and slows the workflow. And while it is possible to add comments separately below an ID, given the increasing number of observations, I think it’s good to look for ways to make the identifying process as smooth and as consistent as possible.
NB: I don’t have a strong opinion of where ‘delete’ should be accessible from given its use is much less frequent. This request is focusing on attaching comments to IDs.
Feature request details:
When in identify mode, after adding an ID via ‘agree’ or ‘suggestions’, clicking edit on your ID it should open the text editing within the identification pop-up window - not open a new tab within the browser. This would match the commenting option that is available when you add an ID by clicking ‘Add ID → Search Species’.
So when clicking here within identify mode pop-up…
I was just dealing with this problem, and I deal with it fairly often, though in my case it’s more about the delete button than about adding a comment to the ID. Usually, it’s because my internet slows while I’m in the flow and I accidentally hit a hotkey (usually “A” for “Agree” while typing out an identification). Sometimes, I end up adding 5 or more “Agreeing” identifications, especially when the word has a lot of “A’s” and the internet is particularly slow. It’s a pain to go through and manually delete all of them given that it opens up a new tab for each one.
Why can’t you add the comment while adding the ID? Being able to edit and add a comment seems like it could be nice, but probably doesn’t come up much.
The majority of the time I ID with either ‘agree’ or from ‘suggestions’ tab, it is unusual to have to type the taxon name for the observations I typically ID. Typing the taxon gives IDers the opportunity to add a comment. As for how often, I’d say not uncommon but couldn’t put a rate on it.
OK, thanks, I will use that - I can see that working for ‘agree’. I don’t think that’s intuitive but it will be useful for those who know when ‘agreeing’. That said, for ‘suggestions’, which may be more likely to benefit from comments, it would still require opening a new tab.
Thank you both for trying to help me - I appreciate it. I still don’t get how to do it - I cannot see a ‘Done’ button. Is it ‘Save’? I tried that and couldn’t see how to do that with agree/suggestions. And I tried entering a comment then going to suggestions. Also I can add a comment and an ID by clicking the ‘Add ID’ button. But that also doesn’t help with ‘info → Agree’ or ‘suggestions → select’ then wanting to add a comment (as far as I can tell).
Am I still missing something or are these for identifying using the ‘add ID’ function?
Can you share a screenshot of what you’re seeing? Here are instructions for how to take a screenshot on several types of devices: https://www.take-a-screenshot.org
Same result, i.e. no comment posted and thus not combined.
If I am missing something then please could someone post a step-by-step. But if it’s essentially "you can post a comment underneath’ then that’s addressed in the Description of need in the first post.
