Adding a disagreeing ID no longer works correctly

Platform: website

Browser: Chrome

URLs of any relevant observations or pages: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/263729087

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

Description of problem:

Step 1: Click “Suggest an Identification”

Step 2: Type “ses” and select “Sessile-flowered Trilliums (Sessilia)”

Step 3: Type “blah” into the comment field and press “Done”

The chosen taxon and the comment will disappear!

i had no problems adding a disagreeing ID (now removed after my test):

Actually, a comment is not necessary to reproduce the bug. I’ve tried three different observations and all three exhibit the same bug.

Can someone try to reproduce this behavior? Thanks!

Also works as per usual for me too - on Chrome, on this observation.

What behaviour, exactly? Typing a few characters, selecting an option and clicking “Done” is one of the most common ways to add an ID - it does not result in the behaviour you describe. There must be something missing from your current description of the problem.

Not related to the browser, but I’ve noticed this doesn’t always work with really old observations (7 years+). A new ID to correct a maverick doesn’t do anything.

I’m going to put in a guess to what might be happening here - if I have an observation open and select an identification, but leave the page open for some amount of time before finishing and pressing done (usually because I’m typing a long comment, or searching for references as I type the comment, etc), something seems to time out on the backend and doesn’t let you actually submit. I will often copy the comment I wrote out in order to refresh the page and submit the ID again for when this happens.

This may not be what the OP is experiencing, but is what comes to mind when I read it.

Yes, potentially the same as this issue.

The sequence of steps is correct and timeout is not an issue. I tried to replicate the issue in Safari but all I get is a blank page (this only happens in Safari). I restarted my computer but all of the reported problems persist.

Do you have some sort of pop-up blocker enabled that is stopping the normal disagreement pop-up (the one with the options, No it isn’t, or I Don’t Know)?

It took me a while to find something I wanted to disagree with, but when I did it worked normally for me:

Followed your steps exactly, the Disagreement pop-up came up, I chose my option and the disagreeing ID registered as you can see.

@trscavo would you be OK with me logging in as your inat account and trying this out? As a staff member it’s something I can do but want to get permission from you. Then I could see if it’s specific to your account.

Thanks @tiwane I’m okay with that.

This happens to me periodically, yeah. I’ve taken to copying my comments and if the stuff just disappears I’ll open the observation in a new tab.

Not specific to disagreeing IDs, but might be just noticed on those in this instance.
