Ambassador Activities

What counts as an ‘activity’ in the ambassador program? Most of the work I do to teach other people about iNaturalist are not exactly organized events specifically for iNaturalist.

I do things like:

  • When people ask me what I’m photographing when I’m out iNatting, I tell them about iNaturalist and sometimes help them download the app using my QR code button.
  • When at any event where I’m volunteering, like preparing native seeds for stratification, I talk to the other volunteers about what iNaturalist is and how it can be used by organizations to select areas and timing for native seed harvesting.
  • I set up places and projects, then put up posters in the neighborhood, encouraging people to think about the wildlife around us, and giving them links to local observations.

Do these count as ‘activities’?

What is “Tabling at a community gathering”? Is it going from table to table and talking to people, or is it setting up a table at an event?

Tabling means setting up a table and letting people approach you. It’s often done at fairs and welcome events. The presentation on the ambassador program was uploaded to youtube. If you didn’t join live, you may find some good info there.

That is a great poster! I would like to create something like that for some of the trails and parks in our community. Do you mind if I “borrow” your idea?

Not sure about “counting,” but you seem like a great ambassador for iNaturalist!

I also have questions about this. Is there any list of what is required that does not require watching the whole webinar? (Ugh, video.)

I love the idea of this, I even have some presentations half-written in my head, but I don’t think I have the capacity to plan and host a whole event twice a year. Are there options that are less intensive?

For reference, in my area, the Audubon society has tried “tabling” at events, and it takes about half a dozen people to pull it off really well. For one person, it’s really hard work, and it’s not very effective.

(Edit: Just realize that was more confrontational than I intended, trying to soften it a bit. )

If you jump to 12:40 in the video, that’s where they talk about examples of activities. But it’s not meant to be an exhaustive list, and the stuff I already do (and have been doing for a couple of years) doesn’t really fit with the examples, which is why I’m asking for more info.

You can definitely team up with others in your area. I think they’re working on ways to match people up. And I think it would still count if you’re helping with an event that promotes iNat but isn’t specifically organized by another ambassador (?)

Here is the flyer for the BioBlitz we did at our museum and then I made a little infographic to tell people about how it went.
