I was hoping to find observations with “No Live Leaves” and “Fruits or Seeds”, but when I choose the second annotation (Fruits or Seeds), it clears the first (No Live Leaves). Is there a way to search observations with both of these annotations?
So, searching for observations with more than one annotation does exist, but only through URLs is how I understand it. I love iNat, but this doesn’t seem user friendly. I fully understand the sentiment of keeping the user interface from containing an overwhelming number of search parameters, and I do think the URL editing is a powerful tool that should exist, but would it be a huge tweak to be able to search photos with two annotation values as I was trying to do in the linked video?
I am a current Industrial Design student, and took several classes on UX/UI design, again, I can see how hard it would be to create a filter page for iNat that wouldn’t be extremely overwhelming😅. I think this is a really interesting topic/question though (should some filters be more easily available than URL editing).
i suspect the choice to leave advanced filters to URL manipulation only is more an issue of maintenance than it is UI design. there are ways to logically organize advanced filtering, but it’s likely easier to add obscure new filters only on the back end and API than to also add them to the filter UIs throughout the system and to also translate them all, too. even the documentation of the API is not always complete. so imagine the challenge of having to make sure the UI is completely consistent with the back end functionality.
