I really miss all of those flowers. I used to find those all the time in California. I had to leave last year after I lost my job, and I am so disappointed I can’t see the flowers bloom in all my favorite places this Spring.

This is becoming one of my favorite threads. In the old days, I found wildflower identification to be nearly impossible using the early field guides (some of which were in black-and-white!), but I’ve developed a passion for flowers using iNat.
A couple of my photos from NJ: An introduced speedwell (Veronica filiformis) and an endangered orchid (Spiranthes lucida)… two ends of the wildflower spectrum.
I really like unusual looking flowers, ones that my brain doesn’t necessarily process immediately as flowers, ones take me a moment to figure out. Here are two of my favorites, both natives.
Astraea lobata I just find wonderfully confusing. I never tire of trying to figure it out.
The intriguing flowers of Dalechampia scandens mimic the vine’s own leaves. (Later it produces bristly little fruits, equally masked from view.)
We have one in the garden. Red for me, freshly picked. Actually has taste. Gorgeous flowers too.
After probably a decade of longing, I finally got to see sand food (Pholisma sonorae) earlier this spring. Parasitic plants are kind of the best.
Unfortunately it was a bit cloudier than I would have hoped for, photographically, although that’s better than direct sunlight.

I would not have guessed that this is in the borage family, though looking at the flower structures I guess it makes sense.
This Golden Shower Tree which was absolutely laden with flowers! It looked really beautiful in the evening sunlight and I couldn’t help myself from nearly stopping in the middle of the road to take a picture.
