Like one other poster here, I had good luck using the now-defunct Canon Powershot sx50HS. Although the resolution is significantly limited by its relatively tiny sensor, that’s also what gave the camera its 50x reach (well, that plus its zoom lens). Moreover the sharpness of the lens on that camera was better than you would have any reason to expect. Also it functioned pretty well as a tele-macro, worked great in butterfly exhibits.
