I think most of them are Bufflehead. I can count at least 6 that are confidently-IDable.
Nice! It would seem theyāre farther north than usual for this time of year. Probably because of how warm this winter is.

Is this really a useful way of conducting a discussion on the forum? There are now over 1200 responses with no sub-headings so no way of finding out if anything is of interest without reading the whole thing. Maybe others have already made this point, but the same problem applies - no way of knowing without looking through all 1200 entries.
Hey thanks for the concern. We try to keep general discussion. Thatās why we have the bird of the week pole. People discuss things about the bird of the week. They talk about the birds personalitys and stuff like that. Itās just a fun way to keep the thread alive. @forum_moderators do yāall agree with me? I havenāt had any problems with having this thread flagged or anything because of how it is ran. Iād love to hear you thoughts. I donāt want to go against the protocol for the forum.
A question for you guys: is anyone counting the bird species to beat the last year number? If so, how many have you seen? (Only seen, or photographed or heard)
Iām back! And I have a bagful of lifers, including hornbills, spoonbills and parrots! Will elaborate when Iām done unpacking and uploading.
there are a lot of newer or young users who enjoy chatting about birds, asking questions, making polls, sharing their trips etc. we donāt want to quash their enthusiasm but the number of comments can be overwhelming.
the other option (which has been tried) is to have 20+ separate threads, which are still difficult to search for ā but also makes finding non-bird topics hard for other users, and makes moderation more difficult for mods.
There are 56 users contributing approximately 22 comments each. Several more are looking that donāt contribute. Those are the ones wondering why thereās a long chit chatā¦
No, but I did in 2023. My record is 151 species.
I saw 222 species of birds in 2024 - I keep count on eBird. I am hoping for more this year.
So far I am at 36 species of birds this year, so not many, but I have not been out birding much the past couple of days.
I keep count on eBird too. Iām at 114. I just started birding last spring so Iām really hoping to rack up some special this year.
That is still good! It takes time to get up to the top! I am lucky that I have parents who are willing to drive me around Ontario Looking for birds!

I get a week off school at the end on January so my dad and me are going to spend 3 days in Algonquin, which is known for Red Crossbills, Pine Grosbeak, Spruce Grouse, Canada Jay, and Evening Grosbeak!
@sawyer_n_a_dawson Have you ever been to Algonquin? I would really suggest it if you have not gone, it is good year round!

I have no hope of beating my world total for last year because I got to go to Panama and this year I have no trips planned out of California. That said I do have a goal to see 300 species in California this year.
