Awesome!
Not this weekend, but this Wednesday I will have to go to a doctorās appointmentā¦which is RIGHT NEXT to a resort with a COMMON GULL!!
Ooh, Iāve always wanted to see a pacific loon!
Cool hope you find it!
I have not. On the floor of the Central Valley that species is very spotty in distribution and tends to be irruptive. It doesnāt appear like they are coming to the Central Valley in any numbers while Golden-crowned Kinglets are being reported at higher frequency. It is interesting to see which things come in from year to year.
Iāve been trying to do that. I successfully did it last year, but just barely. Iām at the point where that becomes very difficult to do. I donāt currently drive, but when I do I will get back to the heavy birding I used to.
The best bird encounter of my entire life occurred in your great home state of Alaska, where we spent a month camping and backpacking in the early 1980s. At that time Bald Eagles were virtually extinct in the ālower 48ā states. We saw them for the first time ever on Kodiak Island. I will never forget it! It was at least three decades before I saw one again, in Vermont, where they have made a comeback, as they have in much of the country. One of the great conservation success stories of all time.
Also on that trip I saw for the first time Grizzly Bears and Moose, and more than 100 species of wildflowers that I had never seen before. Thatās a lot of ālifers!ā
Iād like to scan my old photographic slides some day, and post them on iNat.
I use it most of the time when Iām out birding, and I try to keep my lists up to date. I like having my life list there.
Neat! Alaska is a great state to view all kinds of wildlife.
I went on a walk through the woods in my backyard today and had the opportunity to get a sound recording of what I am pretty sure is a pacific wren.

I also caught a fleeting glimpse of what I think was a great horned owl flying through the trees. Itās so sad when I see something cool like that but donāt even have time to take a photo.
Please do! Iād love to see that.
Itās beautiful weather, feels more like Sept. than Nov., and I just went for a walk in the woods along a stream.
Heard a bird call that I didnāt recognize (thatās common, I donāt recognize many!).
Took out my phone and opened Merlin, which said it was a Belted kingfisher.
I didnāt see it, so I canāt be sure, and didnāt get a good recording so someone else could verify it.
I still consider it a lifer.
The kingfisher rattle call is part of the soundtrack for many places with water. I had an old car that made a similar sound.
I had some warm days too, but it makes me sick because
(a) Climate change
(b) I hate the heat and summer is always an ordeal, so when it sticks around until Halloween I am not happy.
Very cool!
I will announce the Bird of the week starting every Monday. Since I didnāt announce the Bird of the week this Monday. Here it is: The Great Blue Heron.
You could have waited to start next week. Now it only gets one day of glory.
Your exactly right!
Do you think of these, or is this from another list? How are the Birds of the Week picked? Is this a challenge to find that bird this week, or is it just so the birds can get some recognition?
I will just pick a bird that I think of. Do you think we should make the bird of the week thing a challenge to find that bird? We have till tomorrow to decide.
