Common Name Creation

Okay, in the “add name section” it states: “Try to add names that have been used elsewhere. Please don’t invent new names”. I assume this is to avoid creating confusion or arguments within the community about a name that one person thought would be cool (or to avoid external confusion). I was wondering, would it be acceptable to implement this system or something similar:

For taxa with no common name mentioned anywhere, or specifically in the person’s language, someone can suggest a common name. This can then be supported through a “one-sided” voting system the same as the feature request vote system. Once a name reaches a certain amount of votes, it can be elligible for being assigned to that taxon.
.
This system can also help reduce the workload of deleting names that iNat users invented and assigned to taxa themselves (as mentioned in this forum
post–>https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/common-names-invented-on-inat/27452).
.
I came up with this idea when thinking about how fitting “San Franciscan Crane Fly” would be as a name for Tipula vestigipennis (as the scientific name translates to something not specific to this species [multiple species have reduced wings in some form]), which is endemic to San Francisco and San Mateo County.

Thanks for bringing up the topic of common names! If you scroll down below your post, you’ll see some suggested threads on the same subject — including one with nearly 200 replies. There’s a lot of great information there that you might find helpful:

Thank you

The proposal just seems like a system for names to be coined on iNat but with community voting. This would go against a lot of what staff have noted about not wanting iNat to a place where names are coined in previous threads (like this shown by Adam above). It also seems like such a system would be a lot of work and susceptible to sockpuppetry. I would guess it would not be implemented myself, but you could submit a formal feature request for such a system.

I love this idea!

A legitimate approach would be for it to be supported through using it outside iNaturalist and seeing if it catches on. Then, each person who starts using it would be a “vote” for it.
