Community Taxon Confirmed or Improved should not be available on upload

I am struggling to find a way to explain to a newbie in today’s batch.
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/267588801

(this is not ‘calling out bad behaviour’ so I hope the link is permitted)

I add the second ID, and instead of RG it stays at Needs ID.
Why?
Because the newbie clicked! - can be improved - for the Community Taxon on upload.

It is wrong to offer that on upload. With only the observer’s ID there IS NO Community Taxon.
On upload - that question can only be directed to the observer’s own ID. And they will often choose - yes please help improve my ID

I hoped to find a neat tutorial in the Help articles.

Yes - I know the easy out is to counter with my No vote. But that does not help that newbie (and other readers to) avoid making the same mistake in future. We need a better way to prevent this happening.

It is no longer possible to check that box if there is not a community ID.

And yet it appears to have happened with this observation that was just posted yesterday.

Did you notice if the DQA was checked before you added your ID, Diana?

It was checked on upload (there isn’t a timestamp)

Observer has another obs where they chose No.
I have IDed at Genus.
That would become RG at Genus - without either of us intending that.

I just counter voted to see what would happen and now it’s RG.

I am about to remove my vote, but perhaps that is an interior way she is using to keep it at Needs ID so she can come back and add something (annotations, Notes, additional photos, who knows)? People use iNat in so many different ways.

Currently neither of the votes (yes and no) are ascribed to the observer, but instead to different users. Did you definitely see that the initial vote was ascribed to the observer’s account? If so, I would say this ought to be a bug report, since iNat’s intention is that this option is not available until a community ID exists.

Before bringing this to the forum, it’d be best to ask the observer when, how, and why they voted “Yes”. Bascially we’re speculating here.

In the Android app, one can still vote “Yes” for this part of the Data Quality Assessment even if there’s no community taxon. This is only possible once the observation is uploaded, so it’s a design flaw in the app. It’s not possible to vote there before an observation is uploaded.

? the yes is from the observer.
Since this is from accuracy experiment to support newbies, it is an issue which needs improvement. (Design flaw in the app)

It is possible that a new observer would understand the effect of saying Yes. Or No. But unlikely to my mind. Since it comes up for discussion in the Forum.

Ah, sorry, thought I saw a different name there when I checked. So yes, it sounds like it was probably added immediately after upload, per Tony’s comment, and sounds like it is a known flaw, hopefully to be fixed in the new app if not before.
