When looking at other people’s obs in order to make IDs, I usually use the website. This week I have been using the app quite a bit. I came across a quite unusual organism that I wanted to get a better look at so I went to my computer to enlarge the images. This time, the CV suggestions did not include the one organism that I thought might be the right one.
It seems to me that the app was doing a better job, because even though someone had made an initial ID of Fungi including Lichens, CV gave me Plants options, too. On the web, CV stuck with Fungi/Lichens.
A couple hours later, the same scenario played out with a different observation by a different user. The app gave me wider options, even though I was not the first to seek an ID.
On the website, the initial ‘fungi’ ID limits the algorithm to prefer suggestions from that taxon group. The app is naïvely looking at the photo without any systematic pre-determinations.
In my Android app, when I restrict the suggestions to Fungi, the suggestions are quite similar to what you see in the suggestions from the website. This is expected behaviour to me
As long as it’s the expected behaviour, I guess it’s not a problem. Thanks. I still like that the app is “naive,” though, because I think in both these cases it is suggesting the right path. Thanks for your feedback!
Thanks for the screenshots and links, they’re much appreciated.
I agree with @carnifex that this is expected behavior albeit inconsistent.
FWIW, in the new app (which is what @murl10 is using) you can tap on the various photos in an observation to get suggestions for each photo. If you tap on photo 4, you get slightly better suggestions.
