I have the same issue when downloading pictures from a trap camera/trail camera. My camera doesn’t record GPS data. My solution is to carry a small handheld GPS unit. Mine is a Garmin RINO 700. I can mark a waypoint and use those co-ords when lodging the observation. I also use it when I take a picture with my smartphone of something, e.g. a large bird, at a distance. I will go to the spot where the subject was located when I took the picture and record a waypoint. This way the location on iNat will be the point where the subject was rather than my location when I took the photo.
