I’m voting for this, but would like to suggest that the ability to easily exclude taxa should be extended to the suggestions/identitron. In some ways this is more needed because (AFAIK) one can’t use URL manipulation to exclude taxa from ‘suggestions/ identitron’ . As an example: one is stuck with having ants clog up the species browser when trying to ID a wasp that you have narrowed down to Apocrita or Aculeata or Vespoidea
i would also like to see this implemented somewhere in the UI, with the additional option to selectively remove taxa/locations/etc. from subscriptions.
Following up (three years later) to report that the inability to easily exclude taxa from subscriptions and searches is the #1 dissuading factor in my use of the platform. I would have already spent many thousands more hours combing through the fungal content of the site were this feature implemented in any way beyond the cumbersome “command line” method of directly manipulating the the URL.
Maybe thinking about all the hundreds of thousands of observations of fungi that get no attention could motivate you to do it now too even though it’s harder to use url method.
Wholeheartedly agree with this request, I tried to make one of my own asking for the same thing yesterday, because I was identifying a lot of Peronosporaceae observations without the option (I wasn’t aware I could alter the URL…) to exclude mostly unverifiable Phytophthora observations and focus on the good stuff!
Here are some more examples of scenarios where using the search url for exclusions is useful:
Scenario 3:
Reviewing research grade observations for mistakes, and want to exclude a taxon that has already been thoroughly reviewed by others
Scenario 4:
Excluding a taxon that is common in a super populous area, without excluding observations of rarer species that might also be in that area
Scenario 5:
Excluding common invasive taxa to focus on natives
Scenario 6:
Using in combination with the url parameter ident_taxon_id_exclusive to find observations with a particular type of common mis-ID that are ‘stuck’ at a very high level like angiospermae due to not enough votes to refine the community taxon
Just a note that you can now do this much more easily, in Explore. Having excluded taxa in Explore, just click on “Filters” and “Identify” to take the exclusion through to the Identify interface.
