Favorite winter organisms?

I’m a fan of the Californian winter-ephemeral Marchantiophyta, Sphaerocarpos and Asterella are pretty cool.

Lately my favorite winter visitor has been the huge flock of pine siskins that’s been decimating our birdfeeders the past month or so. At times it looks like the patch of ground directly underneath the feeder is a living carpet of feathers

Yes! I like to say, in the idiom of Yogi Berra, that “Winter is the best time to look for the things you can see in winter.” Not only Aplectrum, but several of our other native orchids (Tipularia discolor, Goodyera spp.) have wintergreen or evergreen basal leaves best searched for in winter, albeit when there’s no snow on the ground.
