Sometimes, while going about our daily lives, we run into something new and it’s just a simple thing, but look at that! Something you’ve never seen before! Maybe you’d read about it or saw it on tv or heard about it from someone, or maybe you have no idea what it is and have to spend some time googling it or asking around or pulling out a book and flipping through pictures. Still, the experience of finding something new to you is ALWAYS a delight!
Today was the first time I’ve ever seen this little guy! I believe it’s an Ensign Wasp (Evania appendigaster?) and it gave me a fun lil dopamine boost to spend some time trying to figure out what it was.
What new thing (to you) have y’all seen recently?

Yesterday I was out on a walk in my area, when I spotted and heard a bird in a tree I was approaching. I stopped and waited to see what it was. I saw a very small glimpse of a pretty bird that I had only seen maybe once before. I think it was the Eastern Spinebill. Unfortunately it was too quick to get any photo, and flew away without me getting as long a look as I would have liked. But it was very pretty!

Exactly two weeks ago, I was panning along vegetation, and found what I thought was just a juvenile springtail. But after uploading it onto INaturalist, it turns out it is Sphaeridia pumilis, a very small globular springtail that only has 32 observations on INat, and mine turns out to be the only one in Ohio. And, I found this just in my small, suburban backyard! Goes to show that you don’t even have to walk 30 ft to find something really cool. Here’s a (terrible) photo of the springtail:

While looking for dragonflies last week I spotted a moth that looks like a bird dropping. I have seen photos of them. It’s not something you can really go out and search for. This one turned out to be an Olive-shaded Bird-dropping Moth.

@Tangent_Spinner, a couple of things:
1 Welcome to the forum! (for 3 days ago)
2 Re: the link that @oksanaetal shared, it only has 1 click at the moment, so you might not realize its significance.
There is an existing thread that is very similar to this thread that you created. This other thread, that @oksanaetal linked to, is actually the most-replied to thread on this forum, with 2800 replies!
