Ganoderma Sessile?

Hello! I found these two mushrooms growing up from underneath my astroturf. Google Image defined them as Gandoderma Sessile, but would love to know if anyone form this crew agrees. A few questions -

  1. Anyone know how to dispose of them and ensure they don’t come back?
  2. I cut down the tops and didn’t wear safety gear (mask or gloves) - is that OK? It doesn’t look like they are poisonous but hoping spores in the air aren’t an issue?

As to the identification, that is best left to the iNaturalist website rather than the forums.

Preventing the mushrooms from coming back would be tricky. You said that they grew up from underneath your astroturf. That requires peeling back the astroturf to see what the fungus grew from. All Ganoderma species grow on dead wood, so if it is that genus, there must be buried wood there. You would need to remove the buried wood.

On the other hand, if it is growing from soil, preventing it from coming back will be more difficult because the mycelium can spread throughout the soil. You would probably need to consult a lawn care provider.

A third possibility is if there are living trees nearby with roots extending under the lawn, it could be a mycorrhizal partner. In that case, you wouldn’t want to eradicate it because that would harm the trees.

Welcome to the iNat forum.

As @jasonhernandez74 noted, the forum isn’t for requesting help with IDs. Please make an observation on iNaturalist.org or via the apps, and hopefully you’ll get some feedback there.

They have also given a good answer to the other aspects of the question, so I’ll close the thread.
