Dear inat people, I am going to Doi Khun Tan National Park, I am planning to mainly use Sony A7RV + 90mm macro lens. Do you guys suggest to bring another telephoto like 100-400 for skittish subject or just the macro is enough?
Telephoto is great for birds, mammals, and even fruits on trees or something! I say definitely bring it.
Without knowing what subjects you’d like to shoot it’s hard to say, but if you have some extra funds I’d recommend renting a second body for the 100-400 so you can use each lens quickly without having to change them in the field. It’s a pain in the rear to carry two bodies but it’s great to have the option if you see a cool bird or mammal that’s further away.
I have a Sony A7RIV and use both the 90mm macro and the 100-400mm, but rarely use the 90mm macro. On trips involving flying I only bring the 100-400mm. I find the under 1m focus distance of the 100-400 allows me to get very close to insects. It’s especially useful with skittish subjects such as butterflies, spiders, wasps and hornets. I have programmed the buttons on the lens to switch between full sensor and crop mode. Crop mode still gives you a 26MP image and improved depth of field relative to the full sensor mode. For the smaller subjects I use crop mode all the time but have the option of quickly changing to full mode by pressing the button on the lens should a larger subject suddenly appear and I need more of the frame to fit the larger subject. In the case of plants I’ll take crop mode views of the details (flowers, leaves etc) and full mode for the overall plant. The programmable buttons on the lens are what makes this so easy.
By the way I’ve also programmed the buttons on the macro to toggle between full and crop mode to improve the depth of field.
