Step 1: Despite confirmation from Admin, and the message above saying .HEIC files are supported, they are not being accepted via the website photo upload engine.
I’m getting this with a photo I took on an iPhone and tried to upload to the iNaturalist website (albeit via Windows 11 PC), so I’m not sure it’s a WIndows-specific issue.
Kind of interesting tho that I was I think doing this just a couple of days ago without issue.
So we looked into fixes for this and it seems like the root issue is that Windows doesn’t really support HEIC very well and there isn’t much we can do about it. Our advice is to convert the images to a format iNat does accept before adding to the iNat uploader. We’ll look into providing a better error message.
On modern iphones the option to save as .HEIC or .JPG is a setting. Both formats compress the data and use a redundancy algorithm to reduce the size of file. In fact, the former format uses further compression techniques to reduce the size which usually means a reduction in quality.
The issue here is therefore the space usage on the iphone. Techniques such as regular offloading to external devices such as USB drives can help here, but also ensuring the phone is equipped with sufficient storage when purchased
Thank you for looking into this, and do you have a link to the documented issues with this format on Windows ?
