Helped a humming bird today

There has been a humming bird showing up in the shop lately. Today, he landed on the floor and just sat there with his wings spread open. He was probably exhausted, maybe starving considering their high metabolism.

I took lots of pictures of course, picked him up, and took him to the trumpet vines in my back yard. He stuck his head right in and started feeding. Hopefully there’s enough food for him.

Wow! Great work! Did she fly away later? Which species?

Wow! I’m happy that there are people who care. :star_struck:

How’s the birdie?

Good job! BTW that looks to be a female ruby throated…
The last couple of mornings at my place in Michigan were down in the 40’s, a bit chillier than expected.
Hanging feeder would be good, too.

I forgot to link the obs.

I didn’t stay around to watch. I’m at work, and it wasn’t even break time.

Juvenile female, maybe? She looks like she has the remnants of fledgling fluff.

@mikeschinlaub: well done, mate. She might stick around for a few days to get back up to migration weight. If you see her, keep us posted? Hummingbirds are high on my list of things that I like to photograph that are not known for holding still.

Not sure if this’ll be useful for you, but www.ifoundahummingbird.com has some information about what you can do, maybe a similar organization is available nearby to care for the bird in your area too.

I just got off work and went back to check. Unfortunately, she didn’t survive. :(

It’s pretty late for the trumpet vines. Most of the flowers are wilting or have turned to seed pods now. There probably wasn’t any nectar in them.

Sad news after your helping hand.

Probably she collided into something, like window? rest in peace

No, she was flying around fine earlier. I found her on the ground under the flowers I left her on.

Still could have been internal damage from a collision, like cats that fall and although “land on their feet” but have internal compression injuries that cause irreparable damage.
Take heart that you followed your good instinct to help, you were correct and kind.

Aww poor little tiny birdie, he must be so tired and exhausted! They are so tiny and have to fly so often and drink nectar and pee a lot

Unfortunately, she didn’t survive.

Oh, poor one! It might have been a window collision, as the damage might have been internal…

It happened to me once as well, but with a whitethroat that hit the window and died a week later…
