Description of problem: When trying to identify something on the new iNaturalist app, I can agree or select the same species as already selected for an observation, or I can identify to another species as long as what I select is species level. When an observation is identified to family, I can only identify it to any genus or species, etc. I can only identify down to that taxonomic rank. So if someone uploaded something as Class, I would only be able to identify it as Class, Order, Family, Genus, or Species(and would not be able to put in any taxonomy in the Kingdom or Phylum level). I just found that if the observation has a lower taxon that belongs in a higher taxon that I select, it won’t work. However if I try to identify an observation of a dragonfly at species level to Kingdom Plantae, it will work(as shown in the video).
Step 1: Open the app, find a random observation and click identify.
Step 2: Depending on the observation, I’ve tried to identify an observation that was already at species to another species and it works, however if I try to bring it back to genus, family, order, class, phylum, or kingdom level it doesn’t work.
Step 3: When selecting one of the ones that don’t work, it will ask me to submit the identification just like it will when I select one that will work however after clicking submit to identify the observation, it doesn’t load and add my ID to the observation as it would with a more specific taxonomic ID. So everything works up until the clicking submit button where the bug actually happens.
