I’m curious about place settings in iNaturalist. I often work to ID species along the Oregon Coast. I can search on Oregon Coast, but it only covers the northern portion of the coast so I have to redraw the boundary each time. Is there a way to set up a place for the entire Oregon Coast? There also used to be a setting for West Lane County Oregon which seems to have disappeared. Can I create my own place setting for searching and save it rather than use the defaults that are in iNaturalist and then redraw the boundaries each time?
Places are usually created by users. You can create your own place via a KML file which you can create by drawing polygons on Google Earth. And then upload it to https://www.inaturalist.org/places.
Here is a more detailed guide: https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000175019-how-to-make-a-place-on-inaturalist
Hope this helps :)
Another option is to draw the boundaries you want and then bookmark the Explore/Identify page for quick reference. This may make sense if it is a large area or one where you don’t think having a dedicated place would be useful to anyone except you (e.g. if the borders are idiosyncratically chosen and don’t correspond precisely with political or environmental boundaries).
I agree that drawing the area you prefer and then saving the URL is probably the best option. You can also stitch together existing places to cover areas that are of use to you in one URL and then save/bookmark that URL. I think most high volume IDers have a set of URLs that they use for IDing to save time.
Helpful. Thank you.
Thank you!
