Some time ago, I discovered a colony of Girardia in a pond near my home in French Polynesia. However, this taxon isn’t officially present in Polynesia, and the INaturalist community hasn’t identified it beyond the genus level. So I don’t know if these Girardia are a new species. How can I find out?

Usually, a taxonomist with extensive familiarity with the genus has to notice that it doesn’t match anything they know. That’s why taxonomists tend to be specialists – because there are only so many genera that one person can know that well.
