Yes people do and overdo it. The proper question is, instead of manually correcting 50, 200 or more lists, is there a way to reset the status for a species to “factory settings”? At least when it is totally messed up?
Curators are able to apply statuses to descendent places, which can override many existing statuses. I believe this could be done to set everything to unknown (“factory setting”), but I haven’t tried. Feel free to ask curators on a flag if you have specific examples.
Thanks. Is there a way to learn why the status was changed in the first place? Too much of this undermines the credibility of iNaturalist information.
If you click View for any of the statuses on the species page, you can see who updated it last and when. Sometimes people leave comments. In this case it says Site Admins, and I’m not sure what that means. It says that when a status was inherited from a parent place, but it still says that for Panama and Costa Rica (on your example), which seem to be the highest places affected.
