I also strongly recommend a GoPro. I have a Hero 9 which I upgraded from a Hero 5. I also have a macro lens and red filter attachment from Backscatter – macro is really fun. You won’t get the same quality photos with a GoPro as an SLR necessarily however if you check out my observations – all of my underwater ones are with a GoPro and they’re not bad at all. If you’re just snorkeling then you won’t need lights but if you’re diving then I recommend getting a light set up which I also got from Backscatter. Make sure you get a handle for the GoPro as well as an underwater housing – even though they’re waterproof, the saltwater is not great for them.
Some folks also use the newer housing options for iPhones which works well for some folks – I haven’t tried so can’t speak for those personally.
