iNat says it's captive?

Looking at https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/293686762 I noticed that it’s automatically marked as Casual. How so?

If a bird is escaped it is still consodered casual without any proof it’s captive? (These ones were in a small harbor in the middle of the night so…)

The system can also automatically render an observation Casual grade: if there are at least 10 other observations of a genus or lower in the smallest county-, state-, or country-equivalent place that contains this observation and 80% or more of those observations have been marked as not wild/naturalized, the system will automatically apply a downvote for the qualification organism is wild. This can be countervoted if the observation does indeed depict a wild organism.

if the record is actually a truly wild organism, just add a counter-vote

I found these two ducks without any enclosure or caretaker nearby, only some locals and apartments were around so… I’ll add my vote as ‘wild’.

Think of it more as a default setting. When you make an observation of a species that iNat recognises is typically captive when observed in that location, it defaults to captive; the rest of the time it defaults to wild.

But, in either case, the observer (or any subsequent identifier) can override the default state by marking it as wild/captive themselves.

Just adding a link to the help page for this: https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000170240
