From the link you provided, scroll all the way down.
On the bottom there is a section called ‘releases’. Tap on the latest one (the one shown).
Scroll down below the release notes and open the ‘assets’ section.
First entry should be the apk you are looking for.
You’ll need to enable installation from external sources on Android to install those. Sideloading an app not from the playstore can be a risk but I wouldn’t worry too much about it when downloading from the official iNat repository.
I downloaded it in september, hated it immediately because it didn’t have these two functions and seemed to be more cluttered, deleted it, then came here to whine about it before downloading it again to check. Then you beat me to my edit after I had downloaded it again and was coming back to fix my whining, LOL. Thanks.
Thank you for the work on the new app.
Regarding the future launch of the Android version, is there an opportunity to consider packaging for F-Droid as well?
https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/option-to-use-openstreetmap-in-the-app/59445/3
It’s possible this option will get added in the future. Right now the risk is running in to limitations on the tile usage of OpenStreetMap directly from the servers of the OSM foundation.
Since the servers are payed from donations they have a limitation of tile usage. If a project like iNaturalist will make too many request it might get blocked to keep the service affordable and possible.
Right now iNaturalist is getting Google maps tiles for free without limitations. INaturalist would probably need a similar agreement with one of the big providers like Mapbox or MapTiler to be able to default to OSM (or make the option to use OSM background more widely available)
Hello! I’m not sure what the etiquette is on long threads, so apologies if this has already been said. I love iNat, and downloaded the app earlier this month. I’ve tried a few times to look up other users on there to follow, but the app does not seem to allow socializing?
However, I don’t see a place to view updates from users I follow on iNatNext. On the website, you can see their new observations on your home page under All Updates.
There also isn’t an option to send or receive messages on iNatNext.
Sorry the user that asked the question didn’t make it necessary clear that they were talking about iNat Next.
Yes I definitely agree that this thread should only be discussing stuff about the new iNat Next for iPhones.
Won’t that sharply decrease usage as people’s apps no longer work and they don’t know what happened? It’s annoying to deal with Outlook and Teams changing themselves into the “new” version as a separate instance
Why not simply push the finalized version of Next as iNaturalist 4.0, a standard update to the existing app?
I added some clarification to the FAQ you’re referencing. iNaturalist Next will become iNaturalist, and the current iOS app will be called iNaturalist Classic, or something along those lines, and both will available. iNaturalist Classic will be around for months, at least, to help with the transition. This is to not force people into the new app right away, to allow us time to add more functionality to the new app.
@tiwane has there not been demonstrated significant userbase drop-off when this happens?
A lot of scientists and people plugged into the forum will know what happened and will be able to change to the new app, but even an in-app message on Classic saying “download this new, separate version!” runs a significant risk of demolishing a significant portion of the userbase, namely random citizens uploading their photos and observations for fun, no? Or what is the retention plan?
The userbase would be fractured, and if the new app is better (in my opinion it is) then why not update everyone and they’ll get used to it with time?
For context, I’m an original Seek user, who did not know this forum existed until I looked up last week why there haven’t been Seek challenges in 2025. If it wasn’t for that I would have had no idea any of this was happening
