iNaturalist Taxonomy DwCA file is missing hybrid epithets

In the “inaturalist-taxonomy.dwca.zip” file available in the developers page, the hybrid taxa are missing their species name; under “specificEpithet,” there is just a × symbol and nothing else.

For example, the taxonomy for Prunus × yedoensis (id #47352) is given as:

  • class: Magnoliopsida
  • order: Rosales
  • family: Rosaceae
  • genus: Prunus
  • specificEpithet: × [Note that yedoensis doesn’t appear at all]

Hybrid genera (with rank=”genushybrid” in the file) have nothing in the “genus” column.

And for species within hybrid genera, things are even worse: the genus goes into the specificEpithet column, and the specific epithet is nowhere to be found. See × Chitalpa tashkentensis (349781) for an example.

this seems to be the same sort of thing as this: https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/inaturalist-taxonomy-darwincore-archive-does-not-contain-tribes-subgenera-etc/76108. probably the threads should be merged.

No, they’re different issues. The other one is a plea for a more complete file and is really more of a feature request.

This one is reporting actual errors in the file.
