Insect identified at genus level showing up in "Unknown" Category

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

Description of problem: Dipteran in the genus Cephalops is showing up in the identify page results despite having an ID at genus level.

Step 1: Go to identify page.

Step 2: Filter using location: Eastern United States; Category: unknown; Sort by date added ascending

Step 3: Get to results page 159 (or around there in case it moves up or down a page or two from other observations getting identified).

I plan on adding a rough ID such as “flies” to see if that fixes the issue, but I wanted to bring it up in case there is an underlying issue that needs to be fixed.

Interesting…

It happened before with some other observations (https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/what-s-with-this-not-unknown-creature-showing-up-in-the-unknown-search-re-encountered/10151/6), and I also had one of this cases.

If you vote and then unvote something in the DQA, it will probably disappear.

Yes there’s a lot of these that show up every so often. Not sure what the pattern is. You can see them all here:
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/?iconic_taxa=unknown&order=asc&place_id=any&reviewed=any&view=species&without_taxon_id=48460
(from this thread)

I’ve “refreshed” the genus and that seems to have fixed it.

I figured that would work but I wanted to bring it up in the forum in case the iNat team wanted to know about these cases. Thanks for doing that.

I just came across this one: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/49561321
