iPhone 15 Pro Images not supported for observation upload

Platform: iNaturalist iPhone App and iNaturalist Classic iPhone app

App version number, if a mobile app issue:

Browser, if a website issue:

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages:

Description of problem:

Step 1: iPhone 15 Pro photos are causing the “creating observation” step in iNat Classic and iNat App for iPhone to load indefinitely. Other file types such as .jpeg taken by another camera and screenshots work fine for creating observations

Step 2: I redownloaded the iNaturalist iPhone app and that did not solve the issue.

Step 3:

This is probably due to the HEIC image format that iPhones use natively. Go to Settings > Apps > Photos, and down at the bottom under “Transfer to Mac or PC” check “Automatic”. That should convert it to jpeg whenever you transfer it off your phone.

You may want to change your iphone camera format to “most compatible” under settings, this will change the format from HEIC to jpeg. iNat isn’t the only platform that struggles with HEICs, definitely worth making the switch.

I actually tried this already with no change in result, unfortunately!

I tried this…no change unfortunately.

I have an iPhone 15 Pro and have no problems using either HEIC or JPEG. Are you certain you’re not shooting in RAW?

Hmm, I also just shot a RAW photo and was able to post it.

I believe that any RAW file in the iOS or MacOS photos apps automatically also get saved as a jpeg (or maybe heic on mobile devices) for displaying them.

Interesting - I’m still stuck! Both apps still spin and spin when I try to upload. Do you have any other ideas as to how to solve this?

Are you able to send a screen recording of the entire process to help@inaturalist.org?

I can definitely do that! Thanks so much for lending a hand, Tony
