Hey everyone. Got an e-mail telling me to cancel my Paypal donation and fill my credit card info into some other system, that seems to be running on a legit subdomain on iNat, but shows no info on who will technicaly process the payment etc. Seems valid, but there are zero news about it easily findable in the iNat blog (or I am unable to find those) or somewhere else on the iNat webage - so I am a bit hesitant, as you can easily fake an email header. So just checking: is it real? Sorry for being too cautious.
Thanks!
Hi @tommarekbrno thanks for asking about this and for your support of iNaturalist! Yes, this is an authentic or “real” request and here’s a more technical explanation:
iNaturalist recently moved our donation platform from DonorBox to FundraiseUp (we had essentially outgrown DonorBox). PayPal, as a payment method, does not allow recurring donation “tokens” to move from one donation platform to another.
This would be the case for any nonprofit needing to change or update donation platforms and is not unique to iNaturalist. It is sadly true we will lose some number of recurring PayPal donors, yes. We are hoping people are still inspired to keep their recurring gift! Please feel free to ask any questions, we are here to support how we can. Thank you kindly!
Thank you very much for clarification! I am going to switch the donation into the new system right now.
Many thanks and our apologies for this inconvenience!
