Learning To Identify (primary interest is microscopy)

Apologies if this is the wrong place.

What is the best way to learn how to identify what we observe? My primary interest is microscopy (diatoms, microbugs, “nasties” as my lovely wife calls them!). I have some books that I use, the main ones being Patterson’s Free Living Freshwater Protozoa and IG2 (which I only just acquired), and obviously there are endless online resources.

My question really is: Is there a procedure, or a curriculum of sorts, to learning identification? Or is it just practise, practise, practise?

Perhaps the Tutorial section of the forum is a nice place to have a look. I bet there are tutorials on getting started with identification. Hope that helps and have fun ID’ing!
