One thing that I have in my iNatting bag is a ruler keychain that I got from my college bookstore which is super compatible and useful when put in the field

Here are some examples that show it in use today

Oh, that looks really useful. I sometimes carry a small tape measure that is a bit too floppy for measuring the height of plants.
I’m gonna look for one!

Ah yes but a measuring tape is good for measuring the circumference as well

Always carry a hiking stick. I know, you all probably know all this, but really, it’s useful all the time for me, wether I need to flip a log over, poke a strange blob I don’t want to touch, or simply slide down a steep hill or cliffside.
P.S. I made mine from a birch sapling and it’s great!

I don’t carry a walking stick because it annoys me to have to set it down every time I squat down to take photos of a plant, which is basically every few yards. Or even just to take a photo without squatting, which still takes two hands.

I’ve tried using a trekking pole that has a wrist loop, so I can just let it dangle from my wrist when taking photos, but it still gets in the way, and I am far more likely to trip over my stick than I am to stumble without it!

On the other hand, if it had inches marked on it, it would be useful for measuring things, without having to also carry a ruler or tape measure.
Have you considered marking yours?

No, but I usually just put an acorn or something there for scale.

It sounds kind of silly, but I have attached the eye cups semi-permanently to my binoculars with clear silicone caulk, the kind that is normally used for sealing around the edges of things in bathrooms and kitchens.

It turns out that unless you regularly share your binoculars with others or are regularly switching between wearing glasses and not, you don’t really need your eye cups to be adjustable. I did this to prevent mine from falling off (they were loose), but it’s also very convenient not to have to adjust them. And I can remove the silicone if my needs ever change.

(I have literally never used my binoculars without my glasses because I’m so near-sighted that if I am not wearing my glasses, I cannot tell where to point my binoculars.)
