Lime Hawk caterpillar is sick?

Hello!
I found a line-hawk caterpillar on the pavement yesterday. It had thick black dirt around its head, and wasn’t moving much unless poked or picked up.

It looked like the dry dirt was hindering the moved of its little front legs. I tried to pick out as much as I could.

I wanted to put it back outside but was afraid it’d get trampled on or eaten, so I put it in a box with leaves.

The next day, I found it laying on its back with the legs facing up; it went whitish in colour and its legs have darkened. When I picked it up, it moved and crawled a bit. It sometimes wiggles around the box.

I think the dry dirt might be suffocating it and stopping it from eating, but I don’t know.

Is this normal? Please help!

It sounds like it’s just pupating to me. Put it in a box with a few inches of dirt on the bottom and it should try to bury itself, but it might be too late and pupate on the surface, anyway. I think it can still be successful either way.

Thank you!! I tried the suggestions. It moved around normally around the soil for the first 2 days, but today it’s not moving at all and has turned yellow in colour!! Is this meant to happen or is it dead? :sob:
