I recently discovered how useful lists can be in searching for specific taxa. It’s much simpler to make a list of a lot of taxa compared to making inclusion criteria for projects. I thought this could serve as a collection of sorts for lists people have created that others may find helpful in searching for specific things. To make it easier, I’ll link the list itself and the explore button to view observations of taxa in that list. Sadly, there is a limitation of lists when viewing observations. You cannot filter by taxa (filtering by iconic taxa or projects works though). I have a bug report open for it. Maybe it can be fixed in time. I’ll start the wiki off with a few lists I’ve created. Please feel free to add more or discuss other lists. If the list actually grows, we can figure out how best to sort it.
Another main reason I wanted to start this list is there’s no functionality to search for other users’ lists. So hopefully others who are interested in this kind of thing can share their creations. Whether those lists be useful, interesting, or just silly.
Hmmm. The example links you posted go to the Explore page, but the same list can also be used through the Identify page. When I’m doing identification, I usually enter the taxon names that I like to review one at a time on that page, which can be tedious. By going to my home page and creating a personal list of these taxa, I can search for all of them at one time. And if I decide to add or subtract taxa from my repertoire, I can easily edit that list.
I was aware of being able to search for multiple taxa by adding multiple taxon ids in a URL, separated by commas. Somehow I never noticed the section in How to use iNaturalist’s Search URLs - wiki part 1 of 2, which is right below that section, explaining this trick. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
That’s a good idea too. I’ll have to make one for my own species I identify. Lists are a great functionality that I don’t see mentioned too often on iNat.
My first reaction to experimenting with this is that the Identify page can quickly fill up with observations that I’d normally skip over. I may need to use the “Mark All As Reviewed” button more and/or split my lists into two or three more manageable pieces.
