Hi all,
I currently work in the field of cultural heritage and digital collections, but my scholarship ends next year, so I’m starting to look for my next position. I’d love to transition into the biodiversity or conservation tech space.
I love iNaturalist, it brings together my passion for nature and wildlife, technical skills, and interest in open data and citizen science, but the team seems quite small and doesn’t often have openings. I’ve been digging around for similar ‘naturetech’ projects, but I’m still learning what’s out there. I’m based in Brazil, which of course is a hotspot for biodiversity and conservation. I’d be especially interested in contributing to initiatives related to GBIF, The Nature Conservancy, or even remote sensing/data visualization work — I have a background in GIS and web development, and experience with photography and UAVs.
If you know of any open projects, organizations, or teams working in this space — especially ones that are open to remote or international collaboration — I’d be incredibly grateful for recommendations or leads. Thanks!
Welcome to the forum, Martim!

Thanks @AdamWargon! Are you able to say how introductory/advanced are the courses? I have a mid level understanding and experience in programming/development, machine learning, and data science. I’m sure there’s always something new to learn, just want to make sure I don’t take the spot from someone who would benefit more. I’m also curious what the networking opportunities would be?
Martim,
I can see that you’re a kind person, as you don’t want to take a spot from someone who might benefit more than you. And you’re clearly passionate about naturetech, as you said. You bring a lot of skills to the table!
That being said, your profiles on iNaturalist and the iNat forum are basically empty at the moment. Filling out your profiles helps people understand who you are, what you care about, and how you might fit into projects and initiatives. And making lots of IDs for others is a great way to engage with iNaturalist.
When people see that you’re taking initiative, by filling out your profiles, and identifying for others, and researching opportunities, they’ll be much more eager to support you. You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to keep showing that you’re actively engaged in the process.
Keep going — you’ve got this!
