Missing Observation Field Values

Please fill out the following sections to the best of your ability, it will help us investigate bugs if we have this information at the outset. Screenshots are especially helpful, so please provide those if you can.

Platform (Android, iOS, Website): Website

App version number, if a mobile app issue (shown under Settings or About):

Browser, if a website issue (Firefox, Chrome, etc) : Firefox, and probably others

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages: this URL shows a missing Observation Field value despite the assignment to the FunDiS Fungal Diversity Project (https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/78404038) which requires the assignment of a Habitat or Substrate value. The project home page is https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/fundis-fungal-diversity-survey

Screenshots of what you are seeing (instructions for taking a screenshot on computers and mobile devices: https://www.take-a-screenshot.org/):

Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):

Step 1: On the website, navigate to an existing observation

Step 2: Click on the “Add to a project” field and assign the “FunDiS Fungal Diversity Survey” project. This triggers the appearance of a popup that requests a description of the habitat or substrate as a requirement for assigning the project.

Step 3: Enter the habitat or substrate description and click on the green Add To Project button. The project will be added to the observation but the Habitat or Substrate description is not added to or seen on the Observation page. It can be added independently, but logically if it is entered as part of the project assignment it should appear on the observation so that proper evaluation of the suitability of the observation for the project can be one by project admins.

If the Habitat or Substrate Observation field is added before the FunDiS project assignment, the popup requiring the entry of the habitat or substrate does not appear when the project is assigned.

During Step 3, after you

do you click the white ‘Add’ button

Ah! Apparently the ADD button has not been clicked before clicking on the green Add To Project. I’m unable to reproduce my scenario unless I skip the ADD button. When I click the white ADD, the observation is properly populated.

But, in that case, the FunDiS project should not be assigned to the observation if a required field is not properly populated through use of the white ADD. Perhaps a rule requiring Habitat or Substrate is needed that is not yet in place?

The field is not marked as required as there is no asterisk next to the field name. If you think it should be required, you can reach out to the project coordinators.

Thanks! I believe the project coordinators want it to be required since they present it that way in their text. I will reach out to them.
