Missing species in iNaturalist

Hi, I am new to the Forum. I wonder what to do If a species is missing. In this case it is a fairly common species so maybe I do something wrong?

The species I miss is gonopteryx farinosa.

thank you

There’s something very similar to that, namely Powdered Brimstone (Gonepteryx farinosa).

I see, typo error on my side, sorry!

Maybe a new automatic feature similar to Google’s could be added to an iNat search. Google would respond:

Showing results for Gonepteryx farinosa
Search instead for Gonopteryx farinosa

iNat’s response should be a little different, but something of that ilk.

Meanwhile I flip across to Google for the tiny typo answer. iNat does not forgive a single letter wrong. It has got to be perfect!

I think this will improve over time with AI — the same way that Google asks, “Did you mean . . .?”

And the CV will eventually ask this type of thing as well: “Did you want to ID the leaf, or something on the leaf?”

But these types of improvements are above my pay grade! :woman_shrugging::wink:

That vicious cycle of - tiny typo - so iNat does not recognise the scientific name - and makes it a placeholder. Then destroys the placeholder when an ID is added. Is a substantial part of the reason why we made the Placeholder project. This way, identifiers can still help the obs to what the observer wants as an ID.
Of the first 20 obs we caught, 10 were this sort of tiny typo problem. We have almost 7K obs now - if someone would like to help retrieve ‘missing’ species?
