I’m unsure about my interpretation since I’m not much of a video game player, but I thought it might be a reference to the absorbing mushrooms in the Mario games. I may be wrong though, as I said not very familiar with the insider jokes of the gaming world.

The other classic ending to this cartoon is: (panel 3) the dog bites the standing man; (panel 4) the sitting man says “this isn’t my dog”.

The only thing missing is the Ant Farmers getting mad their aphid poop farm operation is been disrupted
