Nature related dreams

I once had a dream of a giant flock of brown pelicans flying over my house in Arizona. It’s a weird dream, but it probably stems from them being my favorite bird of all time.

Brown pelicans are super common in Mexico. Maybe you would be very happy here.

I just remembered a very weird dream in which I was chasing whimbrels in a public bathroom, unsuccessfully trying to ambush them (they flew away). That was such a weird dream.
I’ve had many nature dreams now that I remember, I must try to remember more of them.

Because this often happens in real life, I commonly dream about trying to film a bird and the stupid camera doesn’t want to focus, or I can’t see through the viewfinder, or whatever… But in my younger days I would literally “dream up” some very interesting birds, and I started putting together a “field guide” with illustrations of all these “dream birds”; it was really pretty fun!

Ooh! I could probably make a field guide of the various taxa (not just birds) that I have dreamed. Like last night – a plant based on Giant Milkweed, but it was in a sister-clade family called the barkleaf family. It had the regular leaves of Giant Milkweed along the stem, but then at the top were two different leaves, shaped like those of a Castor-Bean, but thick and rigid like bark (hence the name). The flower cluster came out from between those terminal leaves, with flowers like a giant version of milkweed flowers.

I dreamt last night that I found a huge bivalve shell on the beach (or was it my backyard?). I immediately recognised it as a tropical species which didn’t belong here, but I don’t remember what happened afterwards.

When I was obsessed with birding back in February, I saw polar bears, deer, pukeko( I think), snipes in my dreams.

Today I dreamt something very weird. I was somewhere in the Gulf swimming with sharks, in a very shallow area (like 50 cm deep, almost nothing), and I was just with my belly on the marine meadow that appeared to be there. Not only that, but there were also some ‘‘baby sharks’’, which were basically bony fish with purple, blue, and yellow patterns, similar to damselfish or serranids, or maybe even angelfish.

My dreams are just too weird.

This is a horrifying nightmare. It reminds me of another nature-related nightmare I had many years ago (even though I have a very tormented mind during the day I almost never have nightmares) in which I was working in some sort of zoo or biological station or I don’t even know what, where I needed to handle poison-dart frogs. I mostly dedicated to transport them all around the building, carrying to a better place to live. I transported them in some weird racket-like cages in which they just held and hitched a ride.
At that time I knew, as a random general knowledge fact about animals, that the Golden Poison-dart Frog was the most poisonous animal in the world, and in my dream, I also managed this species, but tried to never touch it because, I thought that would kill me instantly. But one day, I was carrying some and taking them upstairs when I accidentally touched one. In that moment, I started to get desperate, and suddenly, I fainted and basically died. But luckily, I woke up.

I have died many, many times in my dreams, sometimes by widowmaker, sometimes by T. rex. I’m glad I woke up.

I tried to photograph a talking squirrel in a dream last night. I kept telling him to come down out of the tree he was hiding in, so I could get a great photo of him. He kept running away right when I almost had the perfect picture. At one point I chased him across my yard and tried to pin him down so he would be still, but he attempted to bite me, and then a storm came and I went to a conference of scientists or something which had very little to do with nature.

I never try to engage with those talking squirrels. They have bad attitudes.

Ummm, do not question this but I dreamt that I struck a teabagging pose on top of a king cobra…

In another more pleasant dream I dreamt that I was in the middle of a lodge in a rainforest with a light trap set up and was surrounded by all sorts of moths and other insects and I was having the time of my life just taking pictures.

…and then you woke up and realized you couldn’t post any on iNat?

I had a dream where a tiger was stalking me and my family in our house. It was a kinda terrifying. I wanted to run away forever in the dream. It was especially scary because when I woke up at like 3:20-ish a.m., and the power was out in the house, so everything was quiet and pitch black. The power went back on a while later and I think I continued the dream in my sleep, but way less terrifying and more exciting. Most of my dreams have animals in them, and I’m always calling them by their scientific names (for the several I have memorised). I’ve had some cool encounters with birds I love in my dreams.

On the topic of dreaming, has any here ever had lucid dreams (dreams where you are aware that you are dreaming and can therefore do anything) before? Do you like to do nature related activites in them? I’ve been trying to have lucid dreams for months to no avail…

I have, but they are seldom nature related. Usually, they have aliens in them, or I have some fantastic ability.

I have. Never nature related before though.

In one of my dreams I raced my sister to the passenger seat in our car, and unfortunately I lost, but then I shouted at her “I’m Phylum, so I’m higher than you!” I think she was kingdom. So technically she was higher than me. But it was very random.
