Needed images list (wiki) for future Wikipedia articles

Images of some species submitted to iNaturalist are only available in non-shareable licenses and cannot be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Some of those species already have corresponding Wikipedia articles (see separate list here), but others do not yet have an article written about it yet.

The taxa listed below are not yet represented on Wikimedia Commons but are still requested for possible future articles on that subject. If you have a research grade image of one of these taxa, please consider changing the image license to CC0, CC-BY, or CC-BY-SA and noting it here. Then, another volunteer can upload the image to Wikimedia Commons and the image can be used on a future Wikipedia article (any language).

I randomly clicked on https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/278172-Tibouchina-naudiniana, and it is now an inactive taxon, so perhaps the corresponding wiki page may need some further edits.

Hi robotpie, Tibouchina naudiniana is now considered a synonym of Chaetogastra naudiniana by POWO. There is no corresponding Wikipedia article yet, that is why it is on the list of iNat images for “future” Wikipedia articles. One day, it will be needed.

Why would it be needed? I can’t imagine anyone expecting Wikipedia to have separate articles for synonyms of the same taxon. The retired names just get listed as synonyms on the sidebar. That particular species is on this list twice (under Tibouchina and Chaetogastra), so there’s obviously some redundancy-- one entry would suffice.

But furthermore, if you were to compile a list of all biological species that are not represented on Wikipedia already with their own page, it would probably be in the hundreds of thousands. For example, I know virtually all of my 7500+ species in my focus group don’t have pages, and they won’t within my lifetime-- there’s nobody alive with the expertise and time to flesh out all of those stubs, and many have zero pictures on the internet. For this push to be realistic, you should limit the scope of your wiki.

Hi Tristan, as there are no images on Wikimedia Commons or research grade observations available from iNaturalist under either name, then when the article is (ever) created it can draw on images with either name. There should/will be only one article for the species on Wikipedia.

For many taxa, their images are useful not only on a potential species page but all the higher parent classifications that include it. This means we still want an image uploaded to be available as a representative of the higher taxa, which is more likely to have an article.

The scope of the wiki is already limited by two factors. First, these images have to already exist as a research grade observation on iNaturalist without any shareable license. For your focus group of 7500+ species, I doubt that this is the case. Secondly, the wiki is limited to about 35k characters in the post, so it will never be complete or expand uncontrollably.
