Observation appears on map despite lacking coordinates

Platform (Android, iOS, Website): Website

Browser, if a website issue (Firefox, Chrome, etc) : Opera

Step 1: I was on the page for an upcoming taxon split for an Australian bird, and noticed a point on the map off Africa.

Step 2: Clicking on it shows that it is indeed an observation, but one with no media

Step 3: But when I click onto that observation, it does not have any latitude or longitude/any location info at all aside from a line of text in the description.

How is it possible for this to show on the map without coordinates?

the coordinates are probably recorded as lat 0, long 0, which shows up at that spot on the map but doesn’t display on the location details on the observation page. so bad coordinates, but there is a location description that could be used maybe to figure out where the observation should be.

cheers, makes sense; but any thoughts on why 0,0 coordinates appear as blanks, rather than actual numbers?

don’t know if it was an intentional design choice, but this was previously noted in https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/issues-with-lat-and-or-long-set-at-0/9695.
