Pixelated profile photos

This may have quite a simple solution, but why is it when I go edit my profile on the website and upload nice, high quality profile picture, it turns out horrifically pixelated and compressed? I’ve noticed not everybody’s profile photos are like that. Is there some way to upload a photo and have it retain the detail?

Example: https://www.inaturalist.org/people/321317 The photo I just uploaded was 3000 x 4000 and very clear, but it’s now compressed down to 225x 300

Other profiles, like many of the staff members, have very clear photos e.g. https://www.inaturalist.org/users/28

Reduce or crop your own photo to 300 x 300. Presumably the maximum is 300. See the example. Anything over 300 will be reduced. In your photo the 4000 is reduced to 300.

Some of us consider that a feature, not a bug.

You are uploading an image larger than the profile picture space accepts, so it gets massively downsized and mangled in the process.
